Feasibility of Creating Supported Living Houses

(S.L.H.)

Feasibility of Creating Supported Living Houses

Our Association believes that the care as well as the expenditure for PWD is a permanent social investment and a measure of evaluation of a civilized society. Today, the old understanding and methodology of dealing with PWD in an 'institutional', one-sided, charitable or condemning way is no longer accepted. Emphasis is placed on the great value of their emancipation. Consequently, society as a whole must systematically utilize their potential through their active participation and the genuine respect for their individuality.

The effort of our Association for the construction of supported living houses is focused on the goal of creating dignified and specially designed spaces so as to provide a real home to the persons with intellectual disability who live there.

The 5 Supported Living Houses, where a total of 42 Residents live in them with the support of Scientifically Qualified Staff, enable people with intellectual disabilities to live under dignified conditions by participating in their own life choices.

The houses include individual dormitories, equipped and functionally configured in such a way as to serve the needs of their occupants, individual WC, spacious reception area, kitchen and other common areas.

Our philosophy for the supported living

...to try to match the environment with man

and not the person with the environment...

The creation of this specific premises is already being implemented on an area of 22 acres, in which the Center for the Provision of Services and Employment for people with intellectual disabilities operates. The first house, inaugurated in March 2006, operated as a pilot subject to corrections and adjustments. This valuable experience was used in the future when coordinating the next four houses. The innovation of the project lies in the fact that the spaces where people are employed and participate in various activities co-exist in the same area, as well as the fact that they live at a distance that is not particularly far. At the same time, a wide range of supportive services for individuals and their families will serve both the employees of the Center and the residents of the houses.

The creation by the Association of this specific premises of supported living is based on the model of semi-autonomous living, which captures the potentials of the disabled and seeks to improve already existing skills.

A key principle that governs our supported living philosophy is to try to match the environment with the person, not the person with the environment.
